bug quest v3.0 (THE END OF BUG QUEST)
after a long break i return with bug quest's BONUS update! and also the FINAL bug quest update! (barring any fixes of course.)
MAJOR NEW ADDITIONS!!:
- MAIL ENDING: become a mailbug and deliver all 14 letters across bug world to get the newly added 14th bug quest ending! getting this ending requires pretty intimate knowledge of bug world's inhabitants, so this is probably the last ending you'll want to get!
- MANY NEW AREAS: you can now go south of the rainy zone to the winter zone during the daytime! additionally, a second room has been added to the bee dungeon. nighttime spider zone has also opened up. finally, there is now a post office at the end of the light zone maze. all of these areas are involved in the mail sidequest, so get familiar with them!
- SWAMP ZONE & LUCKY ENDING: there's also the hidden swamp zone and an ultra secret 15th ending that not even the know-it-all bug knows about... can you find them? :) this one was a very mean inclusion and may require a lot of resets even if you do find out where it is, so don't fret if you want to stop at 14!
OTHER ADDITIONS & CHANGES:
- you can now take the shortcut between the rainy and danger zone during the day! this means the spider zone is completely optional. good for people who hate spiders and mazes. the worm on the dock was also moved for people who want to use this shortcut to speedrun to the crime ending.
- rainy nighttime has a new song. the attic also has a special song for the mail sidequest. there are also new songs for new areas of course!
- there has been a FULL text overhaul to clean it up aesthetically. many npcs may have slightly altered dialogue as a result.
- fixed: you can no longer walk on water in the area south of rainy zone. this was unintentional in the previous release and allowed you to get the hopper ending without the butterfly ability.
- shortcut added within the spider maze near the spiderses musicians. you no longer have to traverse through the spiral to travel to and from the leftmost side of the room.
- a few areas have had minor graphical changes/upgrades. the biggest and most obvious one is probably the city area - i'm really proud of that one! it's an upgrade i've been wanting to do for ages now! :)
- removed or replaced a lot of useless stuff that was taking up file space. this includes some unused exits and uber cloned sprite tiles. one example: i originally used sprites to do the sewer light effect, but now that i've figured out how to recolour individual tiles, i finally replaced them all. this means nothing for the player experience, it's just a big win for me only.
- debug bug added! talk to one of the flowers in the sunny zone 10 times to activate debug mode, which sets all your parameters to the amounts you need to unlock the spider, city, snail, party gift, worm, crime, butterfly, and hopper endings. that means you can go straight to those triggers without doing the proper prerequisites! i added this in for people (me) who don't want to have to repeat the tedious stuff like the spider quest chain, the moss hunt, the snail dialogue, or any of the other intentionally annoying bs i put in this game. you still have to put in the work for the mail ending though. NOTE: i haven't fully tested all endings with this turned on so some things might break if you activate debug mode and still go about getting the endings like you normally would. tell me if something doesn't seem to work right!
- as always, lots of new npcs have been added! many are involved with the mail quest, but some of them are just there to be silly. :)
there might be more changes but i do not remember them right now.
ODDITIES:
- if you collect the bee queen's letter and then return to daytime to do the spider sidequest to gain access to the attic the normal way, you could potentially lock yourself out of the spider ending. if you exhaust the spider guard's ability to move you back into the attic (he lets you leave and go back in once) and then trigger the mail dialogue that kicks you out, you will not be able to re-enter. i meant to look into this before putting out the update but i literally just thought about it now. i dont think anyone would WANT to do this (especially since the bee queen tells you to go at night when this isn't a problem) so i dont consider it a high priority fix. but keep it in mind!
the last thing i plan to do for this game is make a walkthrough that details how to get all the endings. i'll attach that to the description if/when i finish that i guess?? but otherwise... yay!! bug quest is done!! thanks to anyone who has played the game or will play the game. this project makes me very happy every day and i'm sure all my friends can attest that i do not shut up about bug quest. i think this game is a little bit cool.
if you see anything unusual/unintentional, let me know! i'm sure i will do another final text fix eventually, but if anything is actually broken or not working then i will update that asap. i made sure to test every ending one last time to make sure nothing exploded so it SHOULD be good but you never know. so. yea. bye bye.
